Arrr mateys, I've edited a saved game file and replaced all the Spanish sounding officer names with names from the CT's forums!

Please note, I haven't had time to fully check to see if the saved game is error free - so you use it at YOUR OWN RISK!

These names have been edited with a Hex Editor - not by using notepad and the .txt file.  What's the difference?  Well editing the .txt files will only create a pool of fore-names and christian-names from which the computer mixes and matches them randomly.  And there is a good chance that there'll be more than one officer in the game with the same name.  However, by using a Hex Editor, you can simply overtype existing names within a saved game file which then become unique.  The drawback is once you divide the plunder, all edited names are scattered to the four winds and are replaced by the original names from the .txt file.  Therefore, if you use this saved game your going to need to play it differently from a 'normal' career - i.e. No Dividing of the Plunder.  This in itself offers a very challenging game (similar to the No-Reloads contests we have).  It's fun to see how long a career you can have without dividing yer hoard!  Couple that with the fact the game starts in 1630, I'd recommend this saved game and game style for advanced players.

Changing names using the Hex Editor Method:

1.  Make a note of all the officers names you want to change.

2.  Save your game and load the Hex Editor Utility.

3.  Load your saved game file into the Utility - you should now see a screen full of machine code.

4.  Use the Find/Replace option to locate the names you wrote down earlier (see screenshot below).  Set the parameter to ASCII format.  The name you enter here will highlight on the right-hand side of the screen once the search is successful.

5.  Now simply overtype the name with your new officers name.  (Make sure the name you're inputting is not longer than the name your overwriting though).

6. Save the modified data and reload Cutthroats.  The names should now appear once you load your (modified) saved game.

Good Luck to ye shipmates!

If ye want to try the modified game I made - here's the link fer the download: NewGame1630
The file is 132Kb and needs unzipping in to yer Cutthroats saved game folder (make sure ye backup yer own saved games first though!)
